Changing lives through early intervention

Infant Club Foot Appeal

A child born with club foot should have the same opportunity to walk, play and live independently as any other child. With early treatment, that future is possible, but access to care is not always guaranteed.

Understanding club foot

Club foot is a condition present at birth that causes one or both feet to twist inward and downward. Without treatment, children can experience severe mobility challenges that affect every aspect of daily life. Walking can become painful, attending school can become difficult and many children grow up facing social stigma because of a condition that is entirely treatable.

In many parts of the world, treatment begins shortly after birth and children go on to live full and active lives. For many families across Zanzibar and Pemba, that access has historically been far more limited. Parents were often left without answers and children faced challenges that could have been prevented with early intervention.

Why early treatment matters

The earlier club foot is identified and treated, the greater the chance of a full recovery.

Without treatment, children can develop long term mobility problems that impact their independence and confidence as they grow older. Something that could have been corrected in infancy can become a lifelong barrier that affects education, employment and daily life.

Early treatment gives children the chance to develop without those limitations. It allows them to walk comfortably, attend school and grow up with the same opportunities as their peers.

How we help

The Infant Club Foot Appeal works closely with healthcare professionals across Zanzibar and Pemba to ensure families can access life changing treatment closer to home.

We help fund clinics, provide essential treatment materials and support the equipment needed to keep services running effectively. We also help invest in training and long term support so local healthcare teams can continue delivering treatment within their communities.

This approach helps create sustainable change rather than short term fixes.

The Ponseti method

One of the most effective treatments for club foot is the Ponseti method, a non invasive treatment that gently corrects the position of the foot over time through a series of casts, minor procedures when needed and bracing.

This treatment has transformed outcomes for children around the world and continues to play a vital role in the work we support across Zanzibar and Pemba.

By making this treatment more accessible, we are helping children take their first steps towards greater independence.

Looking ahead

Thousands of children have already received treatment through the work of the charity, but there are still families who need support.

We remain committed to expanding access to treatment, supporting local clinics and ensuring more children can grow up free from avoidable mobility challenges.

Every child deserves the chance to take their first steps with confidence.
